complexity of the label is in the converting and clever application of the labels to the actual phial. The die cutting had to be precise and capable of being applied and stored in freezer conditions. The innovation is mainly in the end use application.
The Digital Group Winner is Collotype Labels, USA for Diströya. A fearsome looking label with plenty of action. A 210 line screen was used to achieve the extraordinary detail in the illustrations and the script type which can be seen throughout the label. The embossing and debossing is in exact register as is the foil stamping and the spot varnishes. The detail in the four medals is easily legible and the touch of adding a blue stamp adds a touch of colour o the end result. The background effect of the label being printed on parchment paper is a genius touch. A very nice result.
The Judges Special Award was given to Cabas S.A., Greece for Anassa Organics Tea. The judges considered that this set of labels was outstanding in its story telling and the simplicity of the printing processes used. Comments on this label can be found under category A15 Sets of Labels.
Because 99% of the entries arrived in good time it was possible to enter the information into the administration system early ensuring that all the information for the judges was presented in an easy to use format. It was also very encouraging to have available several examples of the labels actually mounted on the bottles or
packages showing the end use as the customer would see the product on the supermarket shelf. Many times this helped the judges make a final decision regarding giving an award.
The number of labels entered in the separate Wines and Spirits categories continues to grow year on year with 57 labels entered which is 22% of the total number of entries. The pattern is repeated in the Cosmetic category with 50 entries which is just 20% of the total. The dedicated Flexographic category was third with 19 entries (7%) followed by Food Products with 17 entries (6%). The total number of Marketing Group entries continues to dominate with 184 compared to the Printing Processes Group with 40. The newly introduced Digital Group attracted 9 entries which was a little disappointing considering the number of digital presses which have been installed recently.
The judging panel was back up to full strength this year. Tony White returned as Chairman with regulars Steve Wood and Murat Sipahioglu. We were joined by the new Chairman of the Turkish Label Competition, Prof. Dr. Efe Gencoglu, Vice Manager of Marmara University, Turkey. We also welcomed back another regular Rik Olthof our expert design guru from Cartils Branding & Packaging, a well known design agency in The Netherlands.
Jakovina (FINAT Secretariat) aptly managed the logistics of entering all the entry information into standard folders before, during and after the judging. Connie (my wife) collated and added up
