about the label industry among youngsters about to enter the printing and advertising sector.
On 23 January, delegations from Tarsus, FINAT and VskE met in Frankfurt in follow-up to the National Associations Board meeting in Amsterdam in December. Now it was the turn for some of the leading exhibitors and the exhibition organisers to share their feedback and to exchange thoughts and ideas about operational and venue improvements for future editions.
march 2012
On 5 March, after establishing its on-line webshop and solving some technical (protection) issues, the new FINAT Educational Handbook, prepared by 4impression with the support of industry experts from FINAT, was officially introduced. Mike Fairley, Labels & Labeling, author of the Labeling encyclopedia, stated “There have been significant changes in label materials and technology in recent years, aimed at meeting a growing demand for new labelstocks, shorter runs, industry digitisation, migration-free inks, rising costs and ever-faster moves towards a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly label-usage requirement. It is therefore an opportune time to produce a new and updated edition of the FINAT Educational Handbook to introduce and explain the latest industry thinking and technologies, especially highlighting the key advances made by digital printing.”
From 5-7 March the active working committees and FINAT Board convened in Barcelona to tackle the items on their agenda.
From 8-9 March, the FINAT Technical Seminar took place in Barcelona, Spain. Taking as its uncompromising title ‘Self- adhesive labels and their future vs. alternative technologies –

evolution or extinction’, the seminar addressed topics and issues across the industry’s extremely complex value chain. See pages 34-39 for the full report.
On 9 March, after the closure of the Technical Seminar the FINAT Young Managers Club organised a mini-symposium, especially for young managers, on communicating innovations effectively to customers. Carlos Alonso, expert in Professional Reinvention and new Leadership, was the main presenter.
From 26-28 March an international jury judged the entries of the 2012 FINAT Labelling Competition. The interest from FINAT members in the annual label competition continues unabated. Although we did not reach the dizzy heights of last year’s record number of entries, the 325 entries that were registered and judged were among the top three in the more than 30-year history of the competition. See pages 60-65 for the full report.
On 28 March FINAT members received an invitation to participate in an online member satisfaction survey, developed in collaboration with Stratus Panteia, a professional market research and strategy development consultancy based in The Netherlands. A few years ago, FINAT had conducted a similar comprehensive survey, which enjoyed an excellent response rate, and gave the FINAT Board valuable input to determine the association’s strategy and to drive member programmes and services for the coming years. The main results of the new survey will be presented at the Annual General Assembly in Athens
(7 June). We take this opportunity to thank all for their input.
