conjunction with the FINAT Board meeting as well as the FINAT Recycling Group. Although the busy working meeting calendar for the three days is sometimes a strain for the participating volunteers and staff members, the back-to-back clustering of meetings as part of the restructured meeting concept has proven beneficial for the efficiency, the mutual understanding and networking, as well as the workflow of the association since it was first introduced a few years ago.
From 29 November – 1 December FINAT’s President Kurt Walker and Managing Director Jules Lejeune visited Labelexpo Asia in Shanghai, where apart from FINAT’s on-going partnership discussions with Roger Pellow of Tarsus, a meeting took place with leaders of the two leading material suppliers worldwide to discuss a global label industry initiative under the umbrella of the L9 to promote sustainability and recycling.
National Associations’ Board
DECEMBER 2011
On 12 December the European National Associations’ Board met in Amsterdam. Including FINAT, 8 associations were present, representing Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Turkey. Since its foundation in 2009, the NAB has served as the platform to stimulate interaction and collaboration between the national associations and on a European scale under the roof of FINAT. Topics on the agenda included liner recycling, the harmonisation of occupational health and safety best practices, the collection of data for the establishment of raw materials indices (carried by the national associations on the initiative of the Swedish association), the establishment of joint food safety guidelines for the label industry, a joint knowledge portal to exchange contacts, calendar dates, and association best practices between member organisations. As special guest at the meeting
Labelexpo Managing Director Roger Pellow, was invited for a mutual exchange and evaluation of the latest edition of Labelexpo Europe. In the course of the meeting, participants were informed about the first (informal) results of the meeting of the EU Packaging Committee in charge of the definitions of packaging. Thanks to the constructive collaboration between FINAT, its affiliated national associations and the stakeholder companies concerned, FINAT are succeeding in making an impact on the decision making, as the Packaging Committee decided not to adopt the draft amendment that defined release papers for labels as an illustrative example of packaging material.
JANUARY 2012
On 13 January FINAT President Kurt Walker, FINAT Managing Director Jules Lejeune, and other members of the FINAT Board attended the Turkish Label Day in Istanbul. On the occasion of that meeting, the hosting association ESD and its President Aydin Okay called for a meeting between delegations of FINAT, ESD and a delegation of Greek label printers that had attended the meeting on the invitation of the Turks. The meeting, which also enjoyed the presence of Roger Pellow and Mike Fairley (Labels & Labeling) and two Polish label industry representatives, offered the inspiration for the Greek delegation to use the occasion of the upcoming FINAT Congress in Athens to convert their intentions to establish a Greek label association into action.
Turkish Label Day 2012
In conjunction with the Turkish Label Day, a panel of judges evaluated the more than 200 entries for the FINAT Congress logo students’ design award that was introduced in 2009 on the occasion of the congress in Antalya. From a spontaneous, ad hoc event the students competition has turned into a regular event on the FINAT calendar and has helped to raise awareness
