THE FINAT VISION
In two sessions held during the summer of 2013, a taskforce from the Board, partly guided by an external moderator provided by De Ruijter Strategy from The Netherlands (whose founder Paul de Ruijter learned the trick at Shell), sat together to define
possible scenarios for the end of this decade and identify the strategic themes for the future. The collective wisdom of the Board members resulted in a great number of possible directions for our industry and FINAT. (See also page 19.) These were clustered into 5 main guiding principles which were subsequently used as the basis for the FINAT ‘Roadmap’, consistent with the following overall vision of FINAT:
1. Leadership by knowledge: to be the leading international (re) source for knowledge, information, experience, best practice and inspiration.
In today’s connected business world, information is floating freely on the internet and nothing is secret anymore. In spite of the many hybrid, virtual, ‘grass roots’ open networks which are emerging nowadays, there remains a need for an authoritative, leading edge international platform which is there to ‘connect the dots’ and be the source for new knowledge and business success. By bringing together relevant content (in terms of market and technology information), and offering structural dialogue with and interaction between business and opinion leaders across Europe and beyond. FINAT aims to fulfil that role. Being a FINAT member is a MUST for label industry business leaders with an international mindset.
2. New technology awareness: to help the industry to adapt to and/or adopt newly emerging technologies.
Opening up the scope of FINAT in terms of technologies which are already embraced by FINAT label converter members is a first step towards a more outward looking attitude. Next step is to provide members access to knowledge on newly emerging technologies relevant to the future of the label industry, for instance in areas like printed electronics, direct print, augmented reality etc.
“FINAT is the unique source of relevant knowledge, networks and information which is key to the
strategic success of international label businesses”
DEFINING THE ROADMAP TOWARDS 2018:
5 NAVIGATING PRINCIPLES FOR FINAT
For an overview of the 5 themes and their scenarios, the reader is referred to the ‘Infographic’ on page 19. The navigating principles (objectives) for FINAT and their link with the overall vision for 2018 can be described as follows:
3. Sustainability agenda: to be the leading light for the industry in regard to sustainability and to help the industry shape/ influence future legislation.
Sustainability is more than recycling but covers a wide range of matters of corporate social responsibility. Having a sustainability agenda is no longer a matter of ‘nice to have’ PR tool but is slowly becoming a license to operate. The EU and European multinationals are often setting the scene for global measures. FINAT therefore aims to expand its role as a resource, educator, standards setter and influencer.
4. Geographic shifts: to increase membership and member engagement from Eastern Europe and other emerging markets. Western European markets, today still the domicile of the majority of FINAT members, have reached maturity and most label printers targeted by FINAT’s more narrowly defined business proposition are already a member. However, label business is becoming more international and further towards the east and southeast of our continent a
