L9 MEETING TOKYO
EXPANDING THE GLOBAL
LABEL ASSOCIATIONS’ NETWORK
On 3 April 2012, the so-called L9 held their sixth meeting, in Tokyo. Special focus of the meeting was on the topic of sustainability and recycling. The meeting enjoyed the presence of the top executives from the two leading global material suppliers, who shared their perspective on the need for a collective industry effort worldwide.
The L9 − founded in December 2009 during Labelexpo Asia in Shanghai − is the informal global platform that brings together nine leading regional trade associations from the self-adhesive label and narrow-web converting industry. Participants have since met during the FINAT Technical Seminar in Barcelona; Labelexpo Americas in Chicago; the TLMI Converter Meeting in Florida; and Labelexpo Europe in Brussels.
The meeting in Tokyo − co-hosted by local manufacturer Lintec − enjoyed the attendance of the leaders of seven associations. Besides the host association JFLP, delegations from FINAT (Europe), TLMI (North America), LATMA (Australia), LMAI (India), PEIAC (China), and Ametiq (Mexico) travelled to Japan. The L9 also includes the associations from Brazil (ABIEA) and New Zealand (SALMA).
The L9 was established with the objectives of offering a global associations network for information and knowledge exchange; joint industry promotion; and collaboration on issues of common global importance. Top priority lies in the area of sustainability – particularly in relation to the promotion of recycling solutions for label materials worldwide.
The Tokyo meeting’s special focus on the self-adhesive label industry’s response to the challenges of environmental sustainability was underlined by the presence of the top management of two leading global players (Dean Scarborough, Don Nolan and George Gravanis of Avery Dennison; Jussi Vanhanen, Erkki Nyberg and Toyohiro Goto from UPM Raflatac), who shared their companies’ perspective on this subject.
