entries were “lost”` in transit. We must thank all the entrants for respecting the request for “on time” dispatch of their samples.
The continued success of separating the Wines and Cosmetics categories was evident in 49 entries being received in each category respectively. This equates to 20% of the entries in each category or 40% in total. This separation allows the other categories to win awards in their own right with labels which are very functional yet maybe are not as flamboyant as the wine and cosmetic entries. The Combination category was the second most popular category with 25 entries (10%). For the first time in many years the dedicated entries for the flexographic category came second (just over 8%) to the Combination category by a small margin. Two entries were selected by the judging panel for Special Mention and both received Category awards in addition.
The number of Marketing Group entries continues to dominate the total number of entries (167) compared to the Printing Processes Group (64).
This year the judging panel had a slightly different structure. Tony White who normally chairs the Panel was unable to travel due to temporary health issues so Mike Fairley, well known in the label industry stood in as temporary chairman for the judging process. The rest of the panel included regulars Murat Sipahioglu from Turkey and Steve Wood from the UK. Steve did an excellent job of pre-checking the entries to ensure that they were all in the correct categories We welcomed a judge from the host country France, Mr Bernard Plat a past president of the French label association UNFEA and Mr Bill Bruce our media judge for this year who joined the judges for the final two days. As usual Rik Olthof from Cartils, a well known design agency in The Netherlands, did a sterling job with his incisive views on the merits of the designs on the winning labels.
Jakovina (FINAT Secretariat) managed the logistic side of the competition before, during and after the judging had been completed. Maxine (Steve’s wife) helped Steve on the pre-judging day to set out the different categories.
