FINAT’S YOUNG MANAGERS CLUB ORGANIZES SECOND GLOBAL CONGRESS
FROM DREAM TO REALITY...
CLIMB TO THE TOP!
With its focused value chain and a core of specialist label converters, the self-adhesive label industry is an unusual latter-day phenomenon. The industry association, FINAT, was founded in the late 1950s, signalling the emergence of a new niche in the printing industry, which really took off in the 1970s, and resulted in the creation of many small label converting companies serving local markets. Today, those pioneers in self-adhesive label conversion are experiencing change in every aspect – including generation change in their management structure. FINAT’S Young Managers Club, founded in 2009, was conceived to address the challenges that go beyond technology change and enhancement; geographical market expansion and globalisation; brand owners’ needs and wants; environmental concerns; and governmental and legislative requirements.
‘Climb to the top’ – the theme of this year’s FINAT Young Managers Club Global Congress – brought together a number of self-adhesive label industry participants in the ‘under forties’ category to sharpen their business skills in a changing world.
Back in the 1970s, when the self-adhesive label industry really found its place in the packaging market as a leading product decoration and identification technology, one of the prime end-use markets for self-adhesive labelling’s broad range of capabilities was alcoholic beverages; and, appropriately, the 2015 YMC Congress held in Bratislava, Slovakia, followed this thread in its overall agenda.

Now, the company’s 80 employees offer a full-service design-to-print label capability to its customers, with a focus on labels for high-end wines and beers and spirits.
Afterwards, Congress participants enjoyed a rich Slovak-style welcome dinner followed (for some) by a beer tasting.
HOW TO BECOME AN EFFECTIVE HUMAN BEING
Next morning, the formal Congress agenda opened with a highly-effective workshop on core management principles -- ‘Seven habits of
highly-effective people’ –
given by Zoltan Demjan of leading global consultancy FranklinCovey. Mr Demjan underlined the fact that ‘we decide on our actions’, and showed how he had taken this concept to heart as a mountaineer, with major climbs and presidency of the Czechoslovak Mountaineering Association behind him.
FOCUS ON THE TEAM
In his highly-interactive
workshop, he showed how
important it is – as in mountaineering – to focus in a business on the team because ‘culture is the collective behaviour of your people’ and, as management guru Peter Drucker said, ‘culture eats strategy for breakfast’. Great business cultures
