GREEK PRINT AND DESIGN COLLEGE STUDENTS PRESENTED THEIR SKILLS TO FINAT
THE FINAT CONGRESS LOGO COMPETITION 2012
The winning logo, used for the 2012 FINAT Congress.
The FINAT congress logo competition was first established four years ago to encourage design students from Graphic Arts Colleges to become involved in the label industry. This year, with the Congress being held in Athens, local colleges were invited to submit designs for a logo representing the congress theme. This year, the theme is “Sustainable labelling – Now is your chance”.
FINAT Board member Aydin Okay
More than 120 entries were received from teaching establishments: The Vakalo Art & Design College and the Akto College, both located in Athens.
Some really interesting and original ideas were amongst the entries, and the general standard was very high, which is encouraging for the future of the graphic design industry especially in Greece. The jury deliberated long and hard in making the shortlist for selecting the winner. The final award, after much consideration, was made to Georgios Karanikas from the Vakalo Art and Design College. He produced a very simple one-colour design depicting the meander, a design often seen round the walls of ancient Greek buildings. His idea was to show, in a stylised way, two hands interlinked and collaborating together − illustrating the international, multi- cultural character of the FINAT Congress. The judges were impressed by the simplicity of design using only one colour, and the concept behind the design. It is instantaneously recognisable as having Greek roots.

The logo is used on all official literature, correspondence, backdrops and T-shirts before and throughout the Congress. It must therefore be easy to reproduce on a variety of media including paper, film, cloth etc. This means that the design must be bold and in as few colours as possible. The winning design meets all these criteria with ease. Congratulations go to ALL the students who submitted designs, on this evidence they have far to go in the future careers.
