But sharing knowledge also starts at the top, when new knowledge comes onstream and needs to be converted into new expertise. For this reason, our biennial Technical Seminar in Barcelona from 4-6 March next year will focus on the theme ‘Turning Technology into Value in the Label and Packaging Industry’.
In the domain of technology awareness I would also like to highlight again a feature dear to my heart: the FINAT Webinar Series. In today’s world of online media, our live webinar series and growing library of recorded webinars is a welcome addition that can easily be accessed by members who do not have the opportunity to travel to our events.
Under the category of ‘technology awareness’, I would also like to rank the FINAT Label Competition, which, in its 39th edition this year, continues to be a display of technical excellence and continuous improvement in our industry.

regulatory affairs and issues of public concern, and represents a common industry voice which is recognised by both the authorities and the stakeholders.
5. MEMBER COMMUNITY
One of our targets for the present 3 year
period is to not only increase our membership,
but also our membership engagement. Our
latest head count of member company
facilities represented by FINAT indicated that in our 60th year, we crossed the 600 member mark. In the 12 months since the launch of our ‘Guest Member’ campaign in spring last year, we recorded 54 applications for a 3-month trial including the FINAT ELF.
But FINAT is more than just its events, and the ultimate gain of being a member comes in the active engagement as a taskforce, committee or Board member. In today’s competitive business climate the availability of committed volunteers is a challenge to many trade associations. Also for FINAT, it is a continuous struggle to get competent member representatives to dedicate spare or business time to the common good of the industry, but I am thankful that over the past 12 months we have succeeded in making progress to bring in new talent into our volunteer workforce. It is our goal to make sure that volunteers are properly screened, recruited, prepared and supported in fulfilling their tasks. This way, not only does FINAT get most out of their specific expertise, but the volunteer gets more his effort in the form of a network of prime contacts, influence, first hand information and of course the fun of working with colleagues and peers across borders.
Members interested in becoming a member of the present group of 80 professionals from 60 member companies representing over 20 nationalities, can approach the Board, FINAT Scout Noel Mitchell or the FINAT Staff.
    member focus
In the last five years, FINAT’s role in providing a
collaborative platform for our Collective Social
Responsibility as an industry resulted in a
series of joint initiatives and projects. One of
the latest additions to our track record on release liner recycling, life cycle assessment, food safety conformity and serialization has been last year’s installation of the UV FoodSafe Group. This group commenced its work in November with the aim to create confidence within end user and converter communities in the use of UV printing in food packaging and labels. This should be done through education and the provision of application specific best practice, enabling the consistent delivery of compliant print to the market. The group has been split into two subgroups: one dealing with aspects related to the printing process, and the other one working on aspects related to printed matter.
As the international ‘hub’ for the label industry, FINAT continues to be ready to be an active vehicle for addressing
   sustainable practice
