researCh glasshouses
The Hortus has a number of scienti c collections, because the plants’ origin is known and accurately documented. The plants in these glasshouses are irreplaceable or very vulnerable. Our collections are used for all kinds of research, for instance, research into plant classi cation; new species are still being discovered, and known species sometimes turn out to belong to a di erent family than originally supposed. We are also conducting research into: plant compounds, distribution, pollination, susceptibility
to disease, history, interaction with other plant species and so on. Results of this research can be used to o er better protection to threatened species, or to look for compounds with, for instance, medicinal properties.

When this plant owers, just for one day, it is placed by a window so that you can enjoy the pale pink, coco- nut-scented owers. Scientists from the Naturalis Biodiversity Center and the Hortus botanicus Leiden named this plant after the primatologist Jane Goodall, because of her
