When the spectacular 16 giant water lily (Victoria amazonica) rst came to European gardens many special glasshouses were constructed specially for it.
The water lily in the Leiden Hortus owered for the rst time in 1872, in a beautiful glasshouse that
had been constructed exclusively to grow his plant. Construction started in 1870, at an estimated cost of 4,300 guilders. The rst ower attracted 30,000 visitors. The Giant Water Lily was also given a place of honour when the current glasshouse complex was constructed.
