assist FINAT and TLMI members with developing their own LCA.
As a first step, both FINAT and TLMI will survey their members to gain better insight into the current awareness and state-of-practice in the area of LCA. As we firmly believe sustainability of the self-adhesive industry will only grow in importance, we are very excited about this landmark joint initiative and will keep you informed on the progress!
A COMMON EUROPEAN FOOD FONTACT GUIDANCE DOCU- MENT FOR LABELS
In September 2014, a meeting of the FINAT Regulatory Affairs Committee with experts from inks and adhesives companies as well as representatives of national label associations took place in Amsterdam. Purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possibility of harmonizing the various Good Manufacturing Practice Guides in food contact which had been developed for the labelling industry by various organizations such as VskE (Germany), BPIF Labels (UK), UNFEA (France) and GIPEA (Italy), as well other possible initiatives in the area of food safety.
It was agreed to draft a joint information
document based on the available material, with the guidance document of the German self-adhesive label association VskE to be used as a starting point. The purpose of the document is to provide insight into the relevant legislation in the area of food contact, the principles behind migration of substances into food and explain the process of declaration of conformity. The document has since been translated and verified by the involved experts, and is to be made available by the European Label Forum in Amsterdam.
ISO WORK ITEM ON THE SPECIFICATION OF LABELS AND LABEL MATERIALS
On the initiative of two multinational label customers, ISO last year adopted a Swedish work item proposal to establish
a harmonized set of specifications for the procurement of labels and label materials. Already at the early stages, label industry associations expressed reservations against such an initiative, as it would be impossible to capture the immense versatility of labels in a single specification. VskE and FINAT therefore became involved in the process through the German DIN ISO mirror taskforce, with the aim to bring in the necessary label industry expertise.
As part of their work in the DIN Mirror Taskforce, a group of label industry experts drafted a simplified checklist, which has meanwhile been accepted by the ISO taskforce. The result is a workable tool that will enable customers and suppliers of labels to work on the basis of the same understanding of the required product. Editorial work is currently being done on the draft specification, which should be ready for
voting and adoption by the national ISO member organisations by mid 2015. If adopted it will be released at the end of this or early next year. Once the specification is released, it will be up for review every three years.
