For the smaller countries, volume and evolution of labelstock demand tend to correlate more strongly with FMCG exports, and hence the average consumption of label materials per capita tends to exceed that of the bigger markets. Looking at the consumption per capita development since 2006, the European average remained above the pre-crisis level of 2006. But where central and eastern Europe exceeded 2006 per capita levels in 2011, the three other regions still remained below the 2006 benchmark.
OUTLOOK 2012: MODEST RECOVERY OF BUSINESS CONFIDENCE AT THE BEGINNING OF 2012
As this edition of the Yearbook goes to press, we are able to provide the first quarter’s results for 2012. During these three months, demand for paper (+0.1%) and filmic roll materials (+0.3%) remained stable compared to the same period in 2011. These results followed three quarters of decline. Whether this modest result signals a recovery from the double dip in demand experienced in 2008/2009 and again in 2011 remains to be seen. The persistent economic uncer- tainty in the Eurozone – and also in other parts of Europe and the rest of the world − makes it difficult to assess the prospects for label printers.
To this it should be added that raw materials price inflation, especially for filmic constructions, is clouding the business outlook for label printers operating in this growing domain. However, looking at the FINAT quarterly index of business confidence in the label industry, it can be seen that − compared to the depressed outlook x among label printers and their consumable suppliers in mid-2011 − cautious optimism was building at the end of the first quarter for an improved result in 2012.
