RECYCLING INITIATIVES FOR 2012
While the groundwork for the recycling project has been laid in 2011, this was only the beginning! 2012 has seen us spreading our message at the FINAT Technical seminar, other seminars and conferences such as the AWA Release Liner Conference and making the message available in a number of other languages. The leaflet has also provided the basis for a flyer from one of the national associations, the BPIF.

HELP US SPREAD THE MESSAGE!
FINAT helped coordinate a meeting of the various regional associations around the world in Tokyo in April 2012, dedicated to recycling and sustainability.
Finally, I cannot emphasize enough that for us to be successful, we need all the support we can get, and in the end, it all starts with you, our members. Help us spread the message within your company and to your customers, and contact me if you have any ideas or suggestions. Together as an industry, we can make a difference!
FOOD SAFETY
A number of food packaging related incidents over the last number of years have made this one key area of interest
LINER
RECYCLING
• Collection and logistics, and
• Communication and awareness
In addition, it was agreed to limit the focus to release liner for the time being. In the summer of 2011, the FINAT Recycling Portal on the FINAT website and a recycling brochure were launched, giving a concise overview of release liner recycling, its driver and challenges and the existing recycling solutions. Aim of these communication tools was and is to spread awareness and facilitate communication throughout the chain.
The portal and brochure were launched at Labelexpo, where FINAT had a dedicated recycling desk, which generated a good deal of interest from show visitors. Recycling committee members, my predecessor Jacques van Leeuwen and myself were on hand to handle questions, and show examples of recycled material. The number of questions clearly demonstrated the interest from the industry and the need
for clear information on the topic. Finally in November 2011, FINAT was invited to present the initiative at the conference of the self-adhesive tape industry association, Afera.
SUPPORTING THE EUROPEAN DECLARATION ON PAPER RECYCLING To further demonstrate FINAT’s commitment to recycling, the Association continued its involvement in the European Recovered Paper Council, supporting the new European Declaration on Paper Recycling 2011-2015, which was launched at the European Paper Recycling Awards in the European Parliament.
The European Declaration on Paper Recycling sets out measures to optimise the management of paper throughout the value chain from paper and board manufacturing, converting and printing through to the collection, sorting, transportation and recycling of used paper and board products back into the paper loop.
