recent meeting - focus points that enable us to approach the major factors for our industry,’ Calvin says. ‘The first is manufacturing sustainability - ICA (independent component analysis), carbon footprint, and energy usage. The second is recycling - not just of liner and matrix, but also of other consumables such as ink, photopolymer printing
plates, and even the oil generated by digital label presses. The third is adhesive technology.’
securing the future of self-adhesive labels
Calvin’s global reputation is a major enabler for FINAT’s initiatives in the environmental arena, but he praises his fellow committee members: ‘Our team members all have the same vision. We want to make a real, finite practical contribution, so that FINAT members can really drive sustainability and recycling at all levels of the label industry, for the benefit of the environ- ment - and for the continuing viability of self-adhesive labels.’
2012 technical seminar theme: ‘self-adhesive labels - evolution or extinction?’
The FINAT Technical Seminars, among other technical communication activities, are the business of the Seminar and Communications Sub- committee, chaired by Sean Duffy (Bluestar Silicones). This was one of the first of the new Sub-committees to be convened, and it resulted in the very successful technical seminars held in March 2008 and 2010 in Barcelona. The team - which represents a true cross- section of the technical aspects of the industry -- took account of member companies’ preferences in terms of location, time of year, and - most importantly - for the presentations and their content. As a result, Barcelona, and the month of March, are now again the place and date for the upcoming Technical Seminar in 2012.
call for papers
Sean previews the highly-relevant content of this event, for which there is a current call for papers. ‘The theme is “future challenges and alternatives to PSA labels - evolution or extinction?” The programme will review where the industry is today; and what are its
pressures - regulatory and environment- al. We will examine the evidence of change in this industry, and the ways in which it has both created opportunities and made life more difficult. And of course we will also have interesting technical innovat-ions to introduce to the delegates.’
The Sub-committee’s parallel activities are in the provision of generic technical information in the form of white papers, entries on the Knowledge Hub, the website, and other publications, for the benefit and education of FINAT members.
