If you carry on walking you can turn right or left again; there are orchid collections on both sides. The glasshouse on the left is a little cooler than the one on the right.
The orchid collection, with more than 6,000 specimens,
is the most important research collection in the Hortus. The Southeast Asian orchids, many of them were gathered in the highlands and lowlands of New Guinea by our own scientists, number more than 3,000 individual plants; these form the heart of our orchid collection, which
is the only one of its kind in the whole world.
