RELEASE LINER RECYCLING
LAUNCH OF THE FINAT RECYCLING AWARDS
2014 was an especially exciting year for the release liner recycling project. Aside from the on-going promotional efforts for release liner recycling, the inaugural FINAT Recycling Awards were launched successfully. The goal of the awards was to acknowledge the efforts made by converters and end-users in this important field, and to spread awareness about the available solutions for the recycling of this valuable material. Recycling Project Manager Mark Macaré reports.
With 11 strong entries evenly spread over the converter and end-user categories, response was excellent, especially for the first edition of the competition. The entries reflected a total of well over 1000 tonnes of recycled film and paper liner, as well as a significant amount of recycled matrix and other secondary material.
Hagmaier Etiketten & Druck GmbH impressed the jury with the high recycling rates for both paper and film liner, the communication efforts made both inside and outside of the company, and with the solutions offered for other secondary materials. Finally, by offering customers take back of spent liner, the company not only demonstrated responsibility for its own secondary materials, but helped others as well.

Unilever edged out the others based on the company’s clear dedication to a zero waste to landfill policy. Not only was this clearly communicated on the company’s website and in its sustainability report, but it was also reflected in Unilever’s long history in liner recycling and its impressive liner recycling figures.

The jury consisted of Jacques van Leeuwen, industry veteran and former FINAT Recycling Project Manager, Andreas Faul, Managing Director of the international association of the deinking industry and Peter Sundt, Secretary-General of the European Association of Plastics Recycling and Recovery Organisations.
WINNERS 2014
After careful deliberation, Hagmaier Etiketten & Druck GmbH and Unilever were crowned the winners. While these two might have received the accolades, the jury would also like to acknowledge the other entries, which made for a close-run contest.
